What is a BEST Course?
Throughout the whole year, BEST organizes different activities where students of technology from member universities get the chance to complement their fields of study, discuss educational matters, learn and take their first steps into an international career, increase their international experience, set up contacts, improve their English level and have fun. Each BEST event is attended by 20-30 engineering and technology students like you, who have something in common: they want to live a unique experience, different from day-to-day school life! In these events, participants attend lectures given by the university’s teaching staff or by experts from companies. At the end of the course, students take an exam, which is designed to evaluate the participants’ success.
- Complement your knowledge in different fields of study
- Visit companies, industrial plants, and research centers
- Take part in case studies
- Follow interesting classes covering many different technology fields, economics, marketing, and management
- Receive ECTS credits in recognised courses

Welcome to Solving Cold Cases in the Genome: Mystery of Gene and Cell Therapies!
Two new detectives are in town, Mr Gene and Dr Cell, and they did not come to play.
Join us in Ljubljana, the ever-growing epicentre of therapy development, where you’ll discover the secrets of gene and cell therapies that allow us to finally solve diseases once considered incurable.
The vibrant city of Ljubljana invites you to come and enjoy its lively atmosphere and get a taste of its rich culture, from its charming medieval architecture to its thriving culinary scene. During the weekend, we’ll explore the heart of Slovenia, the awe-dropping nature that inspires every outdoor enthusiast, and show you what this beautiful country has to offer.
In this course, you’ll step into a rapidly expanding world of innovative therapies. You’ll learn about the mechanisms that treat genetic disorders and cancer at their roots, and master how to translate this knowledge into the actual production of life-changing therapies.
Ready to crack the toughest cold cases in the genome? Pack your bags and join us in Ljubljana. Your investigation starts now.
Learning goals:
The objective of the course is to provide participants with an overview of the wide diversity of gene and cell therapies, and guide them through the key stages of their development — from fundamental molecular principles and innovative mechanisms to their production and GMP standards required for clinical use.
Contents and topics:
In this course, participants will gain deep insight into the workings of gene and cell therapies, exploring the core mechanisms that enable precise gene editing, targeted cell modifications, and innovative delivery systems to treat diseases at their root. Topics covered in the course include development of therapy for rare genetic disorders, cancer treatment, induce pluripotent stem cell therapy and many more.
The learning experience will combine lectures, laboratory tours and company visits, where participants will step behind the scenes of the biotech industry and experience first-hand how gene and cell therapies move from research to real world application.
